Several of those buildings now live second lives as flats, offices, and hotels, and their restoration work is exacting: matching researched period colour matters more there than personal taste. Heathrow leaves a film on everything. Exterior programmes here start with a wash-down and degrease, never a straight sand, and the primers that follow are chosen to grip whatever the traffic has left behind. Inside, the loft conversions and glazing upgrades that the noise provokes all end in redecoration, and the end-of-tenancy refreshes for airline landlords fill the weeks between the larger commissions.
