Wandsworth begins at water. The River Wandle, a chalk stream running down from the Croydon hills, meets the Thames at the foot of the town, and for three centuries that last short stretch drove the local economy — snuff mills, calico works, vinegar yards, and above all beer, brewed on the Ram site from Elizabethan times until Young's closed the brewery in 2006. That industrial past settled into the streets behind it, and the decorating work we do here still answers to it: solid brick, generous joinery, and walls that have been repainted far more often than they have been repaired.

The oldest of that stock clusters around Old York Road and climbs St Ann's Hill, where Victorian terraces keep their cornicing, ceiling roses, and sliding sashes. These are preparation jobs before they are colour jobs. We stabilise lime plaster, ease and line sashes, and have run mouldings repaired in matching profiles before any finish goes near the surface. Towards Wandsworth Common the houses grow into late-Victorian and Edwardian villas along Bolingbroke Grove and its neighbours, and the briefs widen accordingly: tall hallways, stairwells with turned balustrades, drawing rooms sized for wallpaper with a proper pattern repeat, and kitchens that deserve hand-painting rather than ripping out.

Garratt Lane carries the plainer side of the story. The lane — once famous for the rowdy eighteenth-century mock elections that crowned a Mayor of Garratt — now runs past ex-council estates being quietly improved home by home, and much of our time here goes into those upgrades: durable washable wall systems, joinery finished in situ, and communal programmes quoted as one schedule for the managing agent. At the Wandle end, the Ram Quarter has set seven hundred new flats among the listed brewhouse buildings, and new build brings its own worklist — snag corrections, bare plaster sealed properly, and neutral schemes applied to a written specification rather than a guess.
